The first vote on government’s updated water charges plan was held in the Dáil today. The vote on the first Water Services Bill was passed 71 to 51.

This bill provides legal effect to the changes announced last month, including the removal of Irish Water’s right to ask for people’s PPS numbers.

The Dáil will continue in session until after 1am tonight to debate further amendments to the Bill.

A major demonstration against water charges is planned for tomorrow. Large crowds are expected to attend, including some activists from the Detroit Water Brigade, a group similar to the local Right2Water.
