Five African migrants have been injured, one of them seriously, after an Italian man opened fire on them in the town of Macerata.
The suspect, who was quickly apprehended by armed police, has been named locally as 28-year-old man Luca Traini.
The incident is thought to be linked to the killing of an 18-year-old Italian woman whose dismembered body was found inside two suitcases near Macerata. An 18-year-old Nigerian migrant was arrested in connection to that crime.
Local authorities say that Traini had draped himself with an Italian flag before carrying out the shooting.
Political figures around Italy and elsewhere in Europe have repeatedly highlighted the increasing social instability created by mass migration.
