Five people have died after a boat capsized in waters off New Zealand’s South Island with signs that the boat had capsized after colliding with a whale.
The boat was carrying 11 people and were mostly from a bird-watching party. It capsized in calm waters just after 10am in Goose Bay, about 15km south of Kaikoura, local officials said.
A rescue operation that lasted nearly seven hours ended when a police dive team recovered five bodies from inside the ship.
Six people were rescued with minor injuries. According to local media, the captain of the boat survived.
