Five trainee members of An Garda Síochána, Ireland’s national police force, have been sacked following an incident described as a prank that got completely out of hand at the Garda Training College in Templemore, County Tipperary.

The incident, which occurred over the summer of 2025, involved the five trainees allegedly handcuffing a fellow rookie Garda and leaving him under a running cold shower. Reports indicate that prior to this, the victim’s mattress was placed on top of a wardrobe as part of the same sequence of events.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the victim was only freed after another trainee discovered him in the shower, removed the handcuffs, and released him. One source noted that the group had only received their official handcuffs the day before the incident, suggesting over-exuberance played a role.

The five trainees were initially suspended in late June 2025, shortly after the incident took place. At the time, sources indicated that such handcuffing pranks were a running joke among recruits, but that things are different nowadays reflecting evolving standards of conduct and professionalism in the force.

After an internal investigation, all five were dismissed from the training program this week, ending their prospects of becoming fully attested Gardaí.

The decision underscores the high standards expected of those training to uphold the law in Ireland. Misuse of police equipment, even in what may have been intended as horseplay, carries significant consequences, particularly in an era of increased scrutiny on law enforcement conduct and workplace culture.

While no criminal charges have been reported in connection with the incident, the dismissals highlight the zero-tolerance approach to behavior that could be seen as bullying or assault, especially involving restraints issued for official duties.

The Garda College in Templemore has long been the centerpiece of recruit training, producing generations of officers. Incidents like this, though rare, raise questions about oversight and the pressures faced by probationers during their intensive program.

This case comes amid broader efforts to modernize and strengthen An Garda Síochána, including recent initiatives to equip frontline officers with additional tools like Tasers to enhance safety. However, it serves as a reminder that integrity and judgment are foundational to the role—even before officers hit the streets.
