Food Contamination Warning: Tesco recall a number of butters as they contain a bug which can cause meningitis




Tesco Ireland has confirmed they have issued a recall for a range of their flavoured butters from shelves after it was discovered they contain a food poisoning bug that can cause meningitis.

The supermarket chain say the particular butters may be contaminated with high levels of Listeria monocytogene, a bacteria that is known to cause illnesses such as meningitis. Tesco say that four of the butters are sold in 100g packs, whilst the other three are complimentary trays that offered to customers at its fresh meat and fish counters.

Meanwhile a spokesman for the company said: ‘We have been made aware that some Tesco butters may have levels of Listeria monocytogenes present. ‘As a precautionary measure, we are recalling all date codes of affected butters from customers.’

•Tesco Chocolate Chip and Maple Syrup Butter 100g
•Tesco Red Chilli and Lemon Butter 100g
•Tesco Roast Garlic and Herb Butter 100g
•Tesco Three Peppercorn Butter 100g
•Counters Roast Garlic and Herb Butter Discs 10g
•Counters Peppercorn Butter Discs 10g
•Counters Chilli Butter Discs 10g

Tesco are advising customers not to eat these products and to return them to Tesco immediately. They also say full refund will be given and no receipt is required.
