Football icon Johan Cruyff has passed away today after a short battle with cancer. He was 68 years of age.
The Dutch footballer captained his country’s team during the 1974 World Cup, at the height of his playing career, and led Holland to the finals, eventually losing 2-1 to West Germany.
Cruyff would go on to manage Ajax and Barcelona throughout his career.
A statement on his website read “On March 24 2016 Johan Cruyff (68) died peacefully in Barcelona, surrounded by his family after a hard fought battle with cancer.
“It’s with great sadness that we ask you to respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.”
