Former footballer Emiliano Sala was exposed to toxic levels of carbon dioxide during the flight that crashed in the English Channel, killing him and the pilot, David Ibbotson.

Questions have now been raised as to whether Sala and the pilot died, or were incapacitated, during the last stages of the flight.

Sala’s body was recovered from the wreckage at the bottom of the English Channel. The pilot’s body was never located.

Further details about the manner and timing of Emiliano Sala’s death will be revealed at an upcoming inquest. Sala was on his way to Cardiff to join his new soccer team, Cardiff City, at the time of his death.
