The Taoiseach said he believed a “pragmatic solution” would be found to ban the commercial sale of peat.
Addressing Cabinet, Micheal Martin recalled Dublin’s “heavily polluted urban environment” in the 1990s when he said “there were embers everywhere”.
He said the Coal Ban Act has had a dramatic and transformational impact on the quality of the air we breathe and has saved many lives.
According to RTE, Martin said that “ultimately smoky coal is the villain, the real enemy” and that “turf is dying out as a basic fuel”.
“We want to be pragmatic about this and get a solution to the fact that many people in rural Ireland, in parts of the west and midlands, use turf from bogs they have or share with their neighbours,” he said.
“It’s not proposed to ban that. I think a pragmatic solution will be found.”
