With the news circulating this week that current TDs will receive a €5,000 increase to their salaries, it seems the public will be further enraged this morning after it was revealed that 86 former TDs and Senators who lost their seats or did not seek re-election will receive over €40,000 in termination fees.
The news of the large payouts that will exceed €3.5m comes after the House of the Oireachtas published a report outlining it’s concerns for expenditure in 2017.
The report states that the Government will fork out a staggering €3.4 million in “termination payments” by the end of 2016, along with a further €109,000 in early 2017.
Unsurprisingly the perks doesn’t stop there as former Government ministers will also receive a pension that will amount to a grand total of €15.4 million, along with their termination payments.
However, the Oireachtas claims the vast majority of pension payments will be paid out to former TDs and Senators who vacated their seats in prior elections.
