Former Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly claims that ‘it is not possible to scrap water charges’

Former Labour TD and erstwhile Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly briefly ventured outside the obscurity of his own constituency and piped up last night to raise a sword for his beloved water charges, claiming that it is not possible to scrap them.

On the same day, a Sinn Fein MEP confirmed that the charges can indeed by legally abolished, and Fianna Fail also spoke in favor of the abolition of water tax.

Unfazed by the adversity, Mr. Kelly said: “The Attorney General has advised the Government, I know because I actually wrote to the Attorney General and asked her to advise the Government and it was the Government after me that would have got that advise.

“So Minister Coveney should give us a flavour of that.
“Legally the commission are being very clear with this Government so Fianna Fáil are engaging in populism as usual and this is a complete hypocracy.”
