The case arose after, according to former President Musharraf’s lawyer, Akhtar Shah, due to the decision by him in 2007 to suspend the country’s constitution and impose emergency rule.

Following protests against the controversial move, Musharraf resigned the presidency before facing official impeachment proceedings, he had led the country since coming to power in a bloodless coup in 1999.

Following the terror attacks on the United States on September 11th, 2001, Musharraf, a moderate, manoeuvred to make himself an important American ally as then US President George W. Bush launched his “War on Terror” and invaded Afghanistan.

The death penalty prescribed for the former president is unlikely to ever be carried out however, as Musharraf has not returned to the country in some years and now spends most of his time between London and Dubai.
