Former police offer warned he faces jail over so-called racist WhatsApp messages

A former police officer who allegedly sent WhatsApp racist memes mocking the death of George Floyd has been warned he could face jail time.

According to the Metro, James Watts, 31, was serving with West Mercia Police in 2020 when he shared the so-called “grossly offensive” material in a group chat attended by former colleagues from a Warwickshire prison.

Birmingham Magistrates Court heard he had been charged following a police investigation into 10 memes published in May and June 2020, including one showing a white dog dressed in Ku Klux Klan clothing.

Other memes posted by Watts, who in police interviews agreed that the posts were racist in nature, included images of a kneeling rug and a monkey.

Another post, found after a Twitter user claimed a police officer on duty posted racist memes, mocked a line in the movie Jaws.

It’s understood that he’ll be returning to court in August.
