Former Senator sickened that a Bill she sponsored in 2014 to give adoptees the right to their Birth cert is “still just sitting there”

This week, RTE Investigates broadcast an expose on illegal adoptions in Ireland. RTE interviewed a number of adoptees and their heartbreaking back stories.

According to the Journal, Taoiseach Micheal Martin said he is “recommitted to pushing ahead with the tracing legislation this year (2021).”

Martin said “it remains a government priority to introduce information and tracing legislation as a priority, stating that the comprehensive legislation will provide access to birth information, including the birth certificate, for individuals and for anyone who has a question in relation to their identity and, indeed, their origins.”

However, seven years ago in 2014, Fine Gael Senator Dr. Fidelma Healy Eames, founder of the community organisation My Adoption Story sponsored a Bill to give adoptees the right to their Birth cert and also balance birth mothers’ concerns.
Dr Eames states on the My Adoption Story Facebook page that “The Adoption (Identity & Information) Bill 2014 passed all stages of the Seanad and that it’s still sitting there, not yet enacted! There is NO excuse” she said.

Dr Eames continues “Please like and share this post a million times so this Government wakes up to women’s needs, and dignifies their lives and the lives of their children so that this one core request is met. It’s the least we can do.”
