France is to cull around 600,000 poultry in an effort to stop spread of bird flu

France is said to be culling around 600,000 poultry while trying to contain an avian flu virus that is spreading among flocks of ducks in the southwest of the country, the agriculture ministry said.

France is among the European countries that reported highly contagious strains of bird flu late last year, leading to mass culls as authorities try to limit transmission of wild birds to breeding flocks.

France has already culled about 200,000 poultry and plans to slaughter another 400,000 birds, an official with the Ministry of Agriculture said.
