French prosecutors have launched an investigation after an Irish rugby fan claimed she was raped in Bordeaux at the start of the World Cup hosted by France, reports RTE.

The alleged incident happened late on Saturday in the wake of Ireland’s win over Romania in the southwestern city.

She then gave evidence to gardaí who were specially deployed to the city for the World Cup.

In a statement, An Garda Síochána said members “currently deployed in France for the duration of the Rugby World Cup tournament to assist Irish people visiting France are liaising with local authorities in relation to an alleged incident”, reports RTE.

They added that it was a matter for the French police.

Forensic tests are underway and images from video security cameras in the area are being studied in an effort to track down the attackers, prosecutors said, reports RTE.
