Fuel Allowance will be paid to 410,000 households this week

This week, the Fuel Allowance will be distributed to 410,000 households nationwide to assist with the increasing cost of energy bills during the winter months, reports Breaking News.

Recipients will get the payment either weekly at a rate of €33, or, if they choose, in two lump sums of €462 each.

Minister for Social Protection, Dara Calleary, described the payment as essential ahead of the colder season, reports Breaking News.

Speaking on Newstalk, he said: “It’s very important for this time of year.

“We don’t want people to have to make energy sacrifices, particularly as we come into the winter. That’s why the Fuel Allowance is important, and that’s why it will be a focus for Budget 2026 as well,” reports Breaking News.

The 2025 Fuel Allowance season begins on Monday, September 22nd, and will run for 28 weeks, ending in April 2026.

To qualify for the Fuel Allowance, individuals must:

  • Be aged 66 or over;
  • Be under 66 and receive a qualifying social welfare payment;
  • Live alone (or only with certain people);
  • Pass a means test.

Applicants must also be living in Ireland. The allowance is not available if heating costs are fully covered by the person’s accommodation, reports Breaking News.
