A Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA) club in Co Tipperary has expressed deep shock and sadness following the death of an 18-yr-old woman after the car she was driving entered a river last night, reports RTE.
Gardaà reported that the incident occurred around 10pm when the car left the road at Kilaldry Bridge, Kilmoyler, and entered the River Aherlow.
The young woman has been named as Brónagh English, reports RTE.
Ms English, who was alone in the vehicle, was recovered from the water by members of the Garda Water Unit.
In a statement, Moyle Rovers Ladies Football Club said it was “very shocked and deeply saddened by the news of the death of Brónagh English,” reports RTE.
“As we mourn the tragic loss of a talented young life and former player, our deepest sympathies are with Brónagh’s family, and we will offer them every support possible,” the club said.
As a mark of respect, all ladies football activities in Monroe have been suspended for the weekend, reports RTE.
Ms English’s remains have been removed from the scene, and a post-mortem examination will be conducted.
The L3101 road is currently closed for a technical examination, with local diversions in place.
Gardaà are appealing to any witnesses — particularly road users who may have dash-cam or other camera footage and who were travelling in the Kilmoyler area between 10pm and midnight — to contact Cahir Garda Station on 052 7445630, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any Garda station, reports RTE.
Fine Gael councillor for Clonmel, John Fitzgerald, described the incident as “a terrible tragedy.”
Speaking to RTÉ’s News at One, Mr Fitzgerald said “a cloud has descended” over the community following the crash, and the area is now in “despair,” reports RTE.
“Heartbreaking is the only word I could use to describe it,” he said. “I knew her well, and my family and all the community here in Clonmel are in shock, absolute shock,” reports RTE.
To date this year, 55 people have lost their lives on Irish roads, including a woman in her 50s who died in a separate collision between a car and a truck in Kilkenny earlier today.
