An anti-immigration demonstration in Dublin City Centre concluded at Custom House Quay on Saturday afternoon after thousands voiced their discern to the government’s policies.

Earlier in the day, the protest moved past a counter-demonstration located at the GPO on O’Connell Street.

While tensions were elevated for some time, the afternoon went by without any major incidents occurring, reports RTE.

A large number of Garda Public Order Unit officers created a cordon along the central median on O’Connell Street shortly before 2pm.

Thousands participating in the anti-immigration protest marched down O’Connell Street, starting from the Garden of Remembrance.

At the same time, a small group of United Against Racism group assembled outside the GPO on O’Connell Street, reports RTE.

The majority of the anti-immigration protesters carried and waved Irish tricolour flags, while others displayed flags and signs expressing support for US President Donald Trump.

Even though members of both groups chanted at and jeered one another earlier in the day, gardaí successfully maintained a cordon between them.

Gardaí have confirmed that a high-visibility policing plan will stay in place across Dublin city centre throughout the day, and that the city remains open for regular business, reports RTE.

Former MMA legend Conor McGregor shared a video of himself and his family at the Garden of Remembrance ahead of the anti-immigration protest.

In the clip, he called today “a big day here for our country”, reports RTE.

In his post, he told viewers they were not there “to sow hatred amongst each other” or cause division.

He said the demonstration was intended to honour “the valiant heroes who went before us”.

He also stated the protest aimed to “shine our light on the failure of Ireland’s Government and our full disapproval of it”, reports RTE.

Protest organiser, Councillor Malachy Steenson said the day was a massive success and that the government cannot ignore people’s concerns anymore.
