GAA wants NPHET and the government to provide empirical evidence to justify its restrictions of outdoor public gatherings

The GAA is pressing the government and National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) for empirical evidence justifying new measures once again banning all spectators from sporting events until September.

Some have questioned the logic of the measures as people are forbidden from gathering in outdoor arenas for sporting events yet can still gathering in enclosed pubs to watch them on television.

The new restrictions include limiting outdoor gathering to 15 and indoor gatherings to no more than 6 people from different households even in private homes with Gardai being granted Draconian new powers homes suspected of breaching the new rules.

These restrictions have been put in place after an a few dozen positive Covid-19 cases out of tens of thousands of tests, most of which were in meat factories employing cheap foreign labour which led earlier this month to the quarantining of the counties of Kildare, Laois and Offaly.

In a statement following the announcement of the new restrictions the GAA said:

“Following this evening’s unexpected announcement, the GAA invites Dr Ronan Glynn and NPHET to present the empirical evidence which informed the requirement for the association to curtail its activities.

The association will tonight be issuing an invitation to Dr Glynn to meet with its Covid Advisory Group in this regard without delay. The GAA and its members remain at all times committed to protecting public health.”

This comes amid increasing public frustration and bemusement at the seemingly nonsensical and Orwellian restrictions being emplaced by the government to combat the coronavirus.
