The launch of Samsung’s flagship Galaxy Note 7 soon became marred with controversy, after users worldwide reported that their brand new devices burst into flames while charging.

Samsung first halted production, and then discontinued manufacturing the device altogether, in light of these events.

The company, which has lost a fair chunk of its market value after this disastrous chapter, has released a statement affecting Irish customers who have purchased a Galaxy Note 7 model.

The statement reads: “Customer safety is our top priority – following recently reported cases involving the Galaxy Note 7, we have taken the decision to stop all sales and exchanges of both original and replacement Galaxy Note 7 devices. Consequently, we have permanently discontinued production of the device.

“We advise all existing Note 7 customers to stop using your device, back-up your data and switch it off.

To all of our Galaxy Note 7 customers, we are truly sorry that we have not met the high standard that you expect from Samsung. We thank you for your patience during this time, and apologise for the inconvenience we have caused.

“We would like to reassure you and all our Samsung customers that the Galaxy Note 7 is the only device affected,”

It is understood that the company will offer to exchange these devices for a Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge model. Further details of the exchange programme will be posted on Samsung’s website soon.
