Garda Commissioner demands gardai to “use discretion” as regards outdoor drinking

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris demanded that gardai use discretion in relation to outdoor drinking around the country.

There was disbelief when gardai stopped numerous people drinking at purpose-built seating areas outside pubs and restaurants claiming that liquor licences do not cover people drinking at the seating area.

In a post on Twitter, gardai said: “Earlier today, Commissioner Harris issued an instruction to regional Assistant Commissioners that gardaí should use discretion in relation to licenced premises while also continuing to respond to any public complaints received on matters such as public order, parking, noise etc.”

The demands of Harris follow the Minister for Justice Heather Humphreys saying that she spoke with Harris about the legal issues around outdoor drinking and Harris told her that gardai will use their discretion. Take from that what you will.
