According to the Department of Justice, Garda Commissioner Drew Harris and Minister Helen McEntee have not discussed the possibility of Harris’ tenure being extended further, reports RTE.
This morning, a spokesman for the department declared that Ms. McEntee “fully supports” the Garda Commissioner.
“However, no conversation has taken place with the Minister or with Government,” they said, reports RTE.
Regarding the extension of the Garda Commissioner’s term, a spokeswoman stated that “no offer” had been made by “any Department of Justice official” either.
The announcement comes in response to an Irish Times story claiming that the Commissioner was “approached by the Government” for a second contract extension, which he turned down.
In 2018, Mr. Harris was named Garda Commissioner for a tenure of five years, reports RTE.
