Garda overtime for the first 9 months of the year cost the state €138 million




US President Joe Biden’s visit here in April was a major factor in the Garda overtime bill 2023 rising by €48.2 million to a record €138.23 million in the first nine months of this year, reports Breaking News.

New Garda figures show that Garda overtime costs of €138.23 million from January to the end of September are already €127.22 million higher than overtime costs of €11 million in the 12 months to 2022.

Overtime spending in the first nine months equated to an average expenditure of €506,337 per day, compared to €89.99 million spent in the same nine months last year with €138.23 million spent – a jump of 54 per cent.

The financial impact of President Joe Biden’s visit is highlighted by figures showing that garda officers’ overtime costs in the second quarter of this year were €66.39 million, with overtime bonuses paid to officers, reports Breaking News.
