A garda who has been charged in relation to a fatal hit-and-run in 2024, in which a 42-yr-old man lost his life, has entered guilty pleas.

Michael Ball, who was attached to Drogheda Garda Station at the time and is currently suspended from duty, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of Niall McEneaney and to failing to remain at the scene on the Rathmullen Road, Drogheda, on 17 March 2024, reports RTE.

Mr McEneaney was widely known in the area as a GAA coach and a former Louth hurler.

Speaking at Dundalk District Court this morning, State Solicitor for Co Louth Fergus Mullen told Judge Nicola Andrew that the DPP had agreed to the accused being sent forward to Dundalk Circuit Court on signed pleas, reports RTE.

Judge Andrews remanded Mr Ball on bail to the current sitting of the Circuit Court next Monday on his own bond of €100.

The judge also approved legal aid for two counsel following an application from defence solicitor Philip Hannon, reports RTE.

Judge Andrews also noted the presence of members of Mr McEneaney’s family, whom Mr Mullen had indicated were in court when the case was mentioned.
