An officer with An Garda Síochána required hospital treatment after a security breach occurred at Shannon Airport on Saturday afternoon, reports The Mirror.

Three women were taken into custody following allegations that they accessed the airport’s restricted airside zone and damaged an aircraft. This marks the second such incident at Shannon Airport this month.

Reports suggest the breach took place at approximately 4:30pm on Saturday. The last plane to arrive before the disturbance landed at around 4:25pm, reports The Mirror.

When the security breach was identified, all airport activity was temporarily halted, with three incoming planes placed in holding patterns. Air traffic controllers notified pilots that an ‘incident’ had taken place at the airport.

The Irish Coast Guard’s Shannon-based helicopter, which had been set to leave on a training mission, was also grounded once operations were suspended, reports The Mirror.

It is believed that fire coverage at the airport was reduced because members of the Shannon Airport Police and Fire Service responded to the scene. Due to this, operations had to stop since full fire cover requirements weren’t met.

The three women reportedly entered the airport grounds and approached an Omni Air International aircraft positioned at Stand 42, located at the terminal’s far end. They are believed to have splashed red paint on the front part of a Boeing 767-330(ER) operated by Omni Air International, reports The Mirror.

All three suspects were arrested, and once Gardaí confirmed there were no other individuals involved, airport operations resumed. Air crews waiting to land were informed shortly before 5pm that normal service had resumed. The disruption lasted under half an hour.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed: “Gardaí responded to an incident of criminal damage at Shannon Airport, Co. Clare that occurred shortly after 4pm this afternoon Saturday 17th May, 2025. Three females, aged between 20 and 50 years breached the perimeter fence and caused criminal damage. The three women were arrested at scene and are currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Garda stations in Co. Clare. During the course of the arrests one member of An Garda Síochána was injured and has since been taken to University Hospital Limerick for assessment. Her injuries are non-life threatening. Investigations ongoing,” reports The Mirror.
