Garda Representative Association loses court case on paid sick leave

The Garda Representative Association lost a court appeal over changes to the amount of paid sick leave for the rank-and-file officers it represents.

In 2014, it was halved to three months on full pay. It was also cut to three months on half pay over a period of four years.

The GRA argued that its members were in a unique position because of the increased risk they had of being injured in the line of duty.

The High Court rejected their challenge two years ago. This was further upheld by the Court of Appeal today.

“Yeah, [we are] extremely disappointed with the judgement today, and we’re going to have to site back and digest the judgements before Executive and see what avenues the GRA can explore,” said GRA president Dermot O’Brien.

“But I can tell the membership out there that we’ll be exploring every avenue possible, because the judgement is wrong.”
