Taoiseach confirms that he will announce the upcoming date for the general election tomorrow

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has confirmed that he will announce the upcoming date for the general election tomorrow.

The confirmation comes after the Taoiseach revealed his intentions on a local radio station, Mr Kenny told MidWest Radio 96.1fm this afternoon that he’d told the cabinet this morning that he will ask President Michael D Higgins to dissolve the Dáil tomorrow and subsequently announce a polling day.

Mr Kenny told listeners: I’ve already told the cabinet that I will proceed to Áras an Uachtaráin tomorrow to ask for a dissolution of the Dáil and announce polling day.” However the Taoiseach stopped short of revealing an election date, but various reports suggest it will be held on Friday, 26 February, which would mean an incredibly short campaign of just over three weeks.
