The Garda Cold Cases Unit will conduct a full inquiry into the 1996 murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier in West Cork.
Ms Toscan du Plantier was found dead on December 23, 1996 in an alleyway leading to her holiday home in Schull.
Following a review by the Deputy Serious and Organized Crime Commissioner, the Garda Serious Crime Review Team will now conduct a full review of the case.
This team reviews important historical and current unsolved criminal incidents to identify new investigative opportunities in a case.
