Gardaí are now authorized to drive against oncoming traffic on motorways and dual carriageways during chases, reports Breaking News.
A new procedure for spontaneous pursuits from An Garda Síochána states that gardaí may drive contra-flow to traffic if it is deemed safe.
With the implementation of this new protocol, pursuits do not need to be immediately terminated when a chase goes against the flow of traffic, according to a source within the Garda, reports Breaking News.
Spontaneous traffic pursuits will be managed from a control center, which will now decide if gardaí can pursue a suspect on the incorrect side of a motorway or dual carriageway.
This approach is sometimes employed by criminals in an attempt to evade capture, reports Breaking News.
Earlier this year, a Garda was called to appear in Circuit Court after chasing a vehicle that was driving on the wrong side of the N7 in 2021, which resulted in a collision with a truck that claimed the lives of the car’s three occupants.
The new procedure emphasizes that pursuits must not pose a danger to the public, reports Breaking News.
