Gardai claim “after Irish Water, we’d have more respect off the public if we were sweeping the streets”

Young members of An Gardai have banded together to claim that their starting wage of €24,000 per annum isn’t
enough to do the job they’ve chosen.

Online forums have shown young members of the force will not release their name but have claimed that they feel
betrayed by the government and that after the Irish Water fiasco, they would have more respect off the public if
they were sweeping the streets rather than policing them.

The online debate from both sides of the fence has taken hold over the past number of months – but this week particularly with the final demolition of Irish Water, both members of the public and members of the force have combated online over who was right during the many protests across the country.

Various factions of the “No way, we won’t pay” side claim that the gardai were simply security men for both the politicians involved and the meter men installing the meters.

One thing is for sure, we the added pressure of decreased Garda wages over the past number of years, the issue of respect from both sides of the aisle is one that will likely not go away slowly.
