Investigations are continuing into a fatal bus crash in Dublin city centre that claimed the life of an 86-year-old man and left three others in hospital, with gardai saying there is no further update at this time.
The collision occurred when a Bus Éireann vehicle is believed to have driven onto the pedestrianised North Earl Street, near O’Connell Street, on Thursday afternoon, February 5, reports The Mirror.
Several people were trapped beneath the bus, prompting emergency services to mount a major rescue operation.
Three individuals were taken to hospital, one of whom sustained serious injuries, reports The Mirror.
The man who died has been named as Frank Daly, also known to some family members as Francis.
In a eulogy read at his Funeral Mass last week at St Joseph’s Church in East Wall, he was remembered as a lifelong bachelor and the third youngest of 15 siblings, reports The Mirror.
Born in 1940 in East Wall, in the same house where he lived his entire life, Mr Daly began working at The Irish Times at 17 in 1957 and remained there until retiring at 65.
Despite living alone, he was described at his funeral as never being lonely, with close family ties and supportive neighbours who looked out for him, particularly in later years, reports The Mirror.
His family said he retained his “gentle, loving and caring” nature throughout his life, despite losing his father, Thomas, at a young age.
They also expressed gratitude to the Dublin Fire Brigade, ambulance crews, and gardaí who attended the scene on what they called an “upsetting and tragic” day, and for the “heartfelt tributes” paid across social media, newspapers, and RIP.ie, reports The Mirror.
The Garda Síochána investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
A Senior Investigative Officer (SIO) has been appointed to lead the inquiry from an incident room at Store Street Garda Station, reports The Mirror.
In an updated statement on Wednesday, An Garda Síochána said: “There is no update at this time. Investigations are ongoing,” reports The Mirror.
Bus Éireann confirmed it is providing full support to the authorities as investigations continue and will assist further as required, reports The Mirror.
