Gardai investigating the murder of Ashling Murphy have said that they hope that the DNA of a person of interest who is currently in hospital will be able to help them with their ongoing investigations.

According to RTE, the Gardai believe that Ashling struggled with her killer and that the murderer sustained injuries during the attack, possibly from thorns and briars from the vicinity.  They are hopeful that the DNA profiles which have been collected will be of help in bringing the killer to justice.

A search is being made through the location of the murder, with the Garda Underwater Unit going through thick undergrowth and vegetation as they look for evidence of the attack which they believe was carried out by a lone male.  They are also hopeful that they may find the weapon that was used.

The Gardai have also gathered DNA evidence from a Falcon Storm mountain bike as it is thought that the killer may have used it to get away from the scene.

Ms. Murphy’s killing has led to an outpouring of grief throughout the world, with vigils organised to commemorate her as far away as Australia.
