A retired Irish Army Sargent has shocked the nation after he claimed that he has statements from more than 40 victims of a Paedophile ring operating out of the Curragh camp, the largest Defence Forces base in the country.

The shocking allegations were revealed in a interview Mr O’Brien gave to the Irish Sunday Mirror.

Anthony O’Brien (64) retired from the Defence Forces in 2003 but has now gone public with his allegations that children living on the base where he was stationed for over 20 years were subject to horrific abuse, with some victims as young as seven being raped and sodomised.

Most of the alleged assaults were inflicted on children whose fathers were soldiers based in the Curragh, but other allegations are from soldiers, male and female, who claim they were abused and raped by peers as well as Non-Commissioned officers and officers.

According to the Irish Sunday Mirror, in the case of Mr O’Brien himself, he claims he was sexually assaulted a senior army officer in the Curragh in the 1980’s.

Some of the victims have described how they were trafficked from one abuser to another in other barracks around the country while one horrifying case young girl, her sister and brother were all allegedly abused by their uncle, while he was soldier in the Curragh at the time.

The woman goes to explain how her brother would himself later joined the Army, where he was again abused again by other soldiers.

The Sunday Mirror also reported that a retired Lieutenant Colonel also wrote to Anthony confirming that during his 20 years as a psychiatrist in the Defence Forces, he saw many victims of sexual abuse and that “On occasions, the perpetrators were other members of the Defence Forces.”

Statements from the alleged victims have been handed to Gardai at Harcourt Street Station and a senior officer has confirmed that an investigation has been launched.
