Gardai open investigation into possible “badger-baiting” in County Limerick

Gardai are investigating the possibility that people are taking part in “badger-baiting” in County Limerick.

According to the Irish Mirror, the cruel practice involves digging badgers out of their homes and baiting them with dogs. In a lot of cases, the badgers die and the dogs may also be seriously injured. Gardai put the investigation underway after discovering two large holes.

Badgers are a protected species in Ireland and any practice of badger-baiting would be in contravention of the Wildlife Act 1976.

Gardai are taking the matter extremely seriously, asking that anyone who had information contacts
Newcastle West Garda Station on 069 20650, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda station
