More than 900 individuals have been arrested in connection with burglary-related offences over the past six months — averaging about four arrests per day, reports Breaking News.
Gardaà have cautioned that this figure is likely to rise by approximately 20 per cent over the winter period, due to the shorter daylight hours.
Since April, an average of three home burglaries per county have been reported each week, reports Breaking News.
Operation Thor, the Garda initiative aimed at reducing crime during the winter months, is set to commence on Wednesday.
Over the past decade, winter-time residential burglaries (from October to March) have decreased by 75 per cent under Operation Thor, reports Breaking News.
Speaking to Newstalk, Detective Superintendent Seamus Boland said the initiative plays a key role in targeting organised crime groups responsible for home break-ins:
“Everybody’s vulnerable, so it’s important that we look out for our neighbors. The most vulnerable areas are going to be rural areas of our country. It’s important that isolated houses or people who are living without neighbors, living close to them…[that] people keep in touch with each other, note what’s going on,” reports Breaking News.
