Housing Minister meets emergency coordination group as storm season takes hold

James Browne TD chaired a meeting of the National Emergency Co-ordination Group (NECG) on Thursday to assess the country’s readiness for extreme weather as Ireland moves into ‘storm season,’ reports Breaking News.

The Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage underlined the Government’s dedication to providing resources and support in dealing with weather-related challenges over the coming months.

Operating within the Minister’s Department, the National Directorate for Fire & Emergency Management (NDFEM) oversees a coordinated, cross-government response to major weather incidents via the NECG, reports Breaking News.

The NECG brings together representatives from government departments, local authorities, health services, An Garda Síochána, the Defence Forces, utility companies, and transport providers.

Speaking to the NECG, Mr Browne highlighted the importance of collective responsibility during storm events, reports Breaking News.

“It is crucial that we maintain the focus and the ‘Whole of Government’ co-ordination approach that we have used during severe weather events. Furthermore, it is important that we continue to build on our experience from the challenges of the past, including Storm Éowyn,” reports Breaking News.

Mr Browne praised the release of the Community Support Centre Guidance Document, which offers a framework for local authorities and volunteer organisations to follow when activating emergency support centres.

He also confirmed that a review of the response to Storm Éowyn has been submitted to the Government Task Force on Emergency Planning and will be made public in the near future, reports Breaking News.
