Until they locate the child’s body, Gardai think they have a “slim chance” of convicting anybody for Kyran Durnin’s murder, reports The Mirror.

Senior officials think that unless someone comes forward and informs them where he is, it will be hard to prosecute anyone for the horrible act.

The child, who has been missing for more than two and a half years, has not been located despite extensive searches of three separate homes: two in Drogheda and one in Dundalk, County Louth, reports The Mirror.

He was six years old when he was last seen alive at school in June 2022, and he hasn’t been seen since.

Detectives are certain that Kyran was killed in the summer of that year, and he would be eight years old if he were still alive today.

A top Garda source said: “We have our suspects and know who was involved. However, people are not talking. There is a code of silence and no-one is prepared to own up to what happened. Without finding Kyran’s body it would be very hard to persuade the DPP to let us charge anyone for murder or manslaughter and go to trial,” reports The Mirror.

“In saying all that, we still haven’t given up hope and maybe the public may yet come forward with a small crucial bit of information that will lead us to the child’s whereabouts. It is all very frustrating but it is a complicated case and we are just staying patient,” reports The Mirror.

In relation to the murder case, a man named Anthony Maguire and a lady in her 20s have been detained for 24 hours.

One is known to have accused the other of being responsible for the boy’s disappearance, reports The Mirror.

After denying any connection, Anthony Maguire committed suicide a few days later.

His home in Drogheda was among the houses that were investigated, but nothing significant was discovered, reports The Mirror.

Throughout interrogation, he consistently maintained his innocence and said the matter had nothing to do with him.

He reportedly warned the Gardai that hurting a kid would be the last thing he ever did, reports The Mirror.

There was no mention of Kyran in his suicide letter.

The Garda source added: “There are two murder investigations going on in the country where there is no body, Kyran and the missing woman in Navan, Co Meath, Elizabeth Clarke. The Meath case has been going on for 13 years. You really need a body to crack a murder investigation,” reports The Mirror.
