Gardaí say they are treating the desecration of a crypt at Dublin’s St Michan’s Church as a planned crime.
In a statement released today Gardaí l, say that they are currently working on the belief that the cypt was deliberately targeted rather than being destroyed by vandals.
The investigation comes after a the remains of a 800-year-old Mummy known as the Crusader were damaged after his head was decapitated and stolen from the crypt.
Gardaí say that the remains of two other bodies including that of a 400-year-old nun were also damaged.
It is understood that Gardaí are currently reviewing CCTV footage in the area in the hope of identifying the perpetrators involved, whilst a forensic examination is also being carried out at the scene.
Meanwhile St Michan’s Church have confirmed that all scheduled tours of the crypt in the immediate future have been cancelled.
