Gay Marriage: A rift is developing in Fine Gael over Same Sex Marriage referendum

endakenny

Following yesterday’s revelations that a number of rural Fine Gael TD’s are unwilling to risk their parliamentary careers for the sake of Gay Marriage, The Liberal has learned that a block of rank-and-file Fine Gael activists also want nothing to do with what is clearly becoming yet another toxic issue for Fine Gael.

One lifelong member of the party who has campaigned in every referendum and election since 1970 told the Liberal that “if Headquarters thinks they can tell me to get out and canvass for this to suit the Labour Party, they’ve another thing coming. We’re already getting it in the neck locally over water charges.  Most people would prefer to see that sorted out first. This is going to blow back badly on the party.”
Coming on the back of yet another protest march against Irish Water, this news is likely to come as a further blow to Fine Gael’s “Yes” campaign and will give another headache to campaign organisers.
