Gaza is in people’s thoughts this St Patrick’s weekend, says President Higgins

In his St. Patrick’s Day speech, President Michael D. Higgins praised all Irish women and men who are actively involved in humanitarian relief and peacekeeping across the globe, reports RTE.

He said that Irish people will be thinking of the people in Gaza this year, who are dealing with the most terrible conditions due to conflict and relocation.

As part of its commitment to living in peace and harmony with its global family, President Higgins remarked that Ireland’s tangible contribution to peace-building is an example of Irishness at its finest in a world marred by conflicts and instability, reports RTE.

He spoke on the situation in Gaza, mentioning the offensive that Hamas carried out in October of last year, which he said was followed by a terrible strike and retaliation that resulted in the collective punishment of the Gaza population.

In addition, President Higgins demanded the immediate end of hostilities and the release of all prisoners.

The President commended Ireland for being a trailblazer in increasing funding to UNRWA, reports RTE.
