Gemma O’Doherty and John Waters win the right for a High Court hearing on Covid-19 laws

On Tuesday morning investigative Journalist Gemma O’Doherty and author John Waters have been granted a High Court hearing in regard to their challenge to the government’s emergency Covid-19 laws.

O’Doherty and Waters have taken a legal challenge against the State seeking to strike down laws introduced as part of government’s campaign to stem the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown the country’s population.

However, the two activists contest that these lockdown restrictions are unconstitutional and a violation of the rights of the citizens of Ireland.

At the judicial review of the proceedings brought by Gemma O’Doherty and John Waters against the State took place a large number of Gardai set up barriers outside to control the dozens of citizens who came out on support of the legal challenge against the government.

In an ironic twist, numerous members of the press, from outlets overtly hostile to the former Irish Independent and her legal action, crowded together outside the court without masks in a flagrant violation of the self-isolation and social distancing rules they so eagerly defend.

O’Doherty also claimed that John Waters and herself were threatened with arrest on their way to the court on Tuesday morning tweeting:

“Gardai threatened to arrest John Waters and me on our way to court today. The state is a cornered rat at this stage, and so out of control, its gun-toting Gestapo are capable of anything. Record all dealings with them. They will be held to account soon #LockdownIreland #COVID19”

This small victory for those opposed to the Draconian lockdown comes as people’s patience wears thin with the restrictions and more and more questions are being asked about the legality and constitutionality of the government’s actions.
