The German finance minister for the state of Hesse Thomas Schäfer, has taken his own life apparently after becoming “deeply worried” about the economic impact of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
The 54-yr-old was found dead near a railway line on Saturday and the Wiesbaden prosecution’s office said they believe he died by suicide.
Schaefer was a close friend and ally of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and was touted as a likely replacement for Volker Bouffier as Premier of the state of Hesse which is home to Germany’s financial capital Frankfurt and the European Central Bank is also located in Frankfurt.
Mr Schäfer is survived by his wife and two children.
