Germany is to reinstate border controls to try and cope with the huge flow of refugees entering the country. The measure has been announced as temporary. All trains entering the country from Austria have been halted. The decision was made just a week after chancellor Angela Merkel opened German borders to asylum seekers.
“The aim of these measures is to limit the current inflows to Germany and to return to orderly procedures when people enter the country,” said Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere.
The measure is allowed under Europe’s Schengen treaty, but only as a temporary solution. EU interior ministers will hold an emergency meeting to discuss spreading asylum seekers around the 28-nation bloc. Germany, a rich country will a strong economy has become a magnet for asylum seekers.
Police said around 13,000 migrants arrived in the southern city of Munich alone on Saturday, and another 3,000 on Sunday morning.
