“Ghost Ship” owner makes contact as locals are asked to “stay off the ship”

The owner of an 80-meter ghost ship that ran aground on the Coast of East Cork has made contact with authorities.

The Alta, a cargo ship that has been abandoned and adrift for over a year, was deserted by its crew in October 2018 while en route from Greece to Haiti while it was 1,500 nautical miles west of the African coast in Southeast Bermuda.

Following its abandonment, the ship was hijacked twice and on the latter occasion was towed to the South American nation of Guyana

The last officially reported sighting of the Alta was in the mid-Atlantic in September when the wandering vessel was spotted by crew onboard the HMS Protector.

It’s understood that the owner has made contact with locals advised to stay off the vessel after a number of sightings of “visiters” over the past two days.
