Four hard working Galway men found not guilty of illegal turf cutting

Over 30 demonstrators were outside Galway courthouse on Tuesday morning supporting four men who were in court involving an EU directive against illegal turf cutting.

The alleged offences took place on protected raised bogs in south county Galway between May and August in 2012.

The State admitted that they couldn’t offer enough evidence to support the claim and the Judge freed the man, who had to wait close to eight years for their freedom of the case.

Patrick Mcdonagh, Tony Porter, Padraig Byrne and Michael D’Arcy were all delighted to be found not guilty and said that how can any property be a European site without even talking about it.

Many are saying similar to Michael Fitmaurice TD that bringing decent people to court for cutting their own turf while many drug dealers are roaming the street just doesn’t make sense.
