God love them – Works to begin to rebuild the shop and petrol station in Creeslough

In the coming weeks, a new store will open for tragedy-stricken Creeslough in Co Donegal.

The Applegreen gas station, where 10 people died in an explosion earlier this month, was the only store in town.

But now the owners of the Applegreen Service Station have said they are working to bring a new store to town.

Work has already started on the site near the church of San Michele in the village.

Danny Martin Lafferty and his sister Annette say they were overwhelmed by the support they received.

Both were at the scene when the explosion occurred, but miraculously escaped serious injury.

According to Mirror, they said “We have been working closely with our retail partner Nearby Ireland and S&W Wholesale on getting those much-needed services and essentials back into our community. We hope to have a store opened for you in the next few weeks. We have been overwhelmed by the help, support and guidance from friends, strangers and the community of Creeslough to get it to this stage and we cannot thank you all enough. See you all soon.”

A temporary store of essential containers was opened for locals who simply made donations in exchange for vital food items such as milk and bread.

But now, hopefully, the new store will add another degree of normalcy to the community that has been going through a lot in recent weeks.

The store envelope is already built and contractors are on site working around the clock to complete it as quickly as possible.

Parts of the old Applegreen Store continue to be removed.

An in-depth investigation into the causes of the tragedy that killed ten people is still being carried out with specialist Garda and Health and Safety Authority officials on site.
