One bookshop turned into a gold mine recently when two gold coins were found in the spine of an old prayer book.

According to RTE, the discovery was made in Galway’s Kenny’s Bookshop when a number of books bought from a Diocesan library were being catalogued by Sarah Gallagher.

The coins are dated 1821 – 1947 and are thought to have originated in Mexico.  The big surprise is the value as they are estimated to be worth approximately €5,000.  The book where they were found came from a large library recently purchased buy the shop owner Tomas Kenny.  He has already contacted the person who sold it to him as there was no mention of gold coins when the deal was made.
