Good idea? McDonald’s may put customers’ car number plates on bags to catch people who litter

McDonald’s self-service customers are allowed to print their car license plates on food packaging in a bid by the council to discourage waste.

The Welsh government has been “exploring” the possibility with the fast food chain after a spike in waste following the first lockdown.

Swansea Council’s manager of cleanup, parks and waste, Chris Howell, said the idea could work in theory, but would have some drawbacks.

Howell told a corporate handover meeting on climate change: “The Welsh government has explored with McDonald’s, or their franchises, whether or not they could print number plates of cars collecting takeaways from their drive-throughs with a view that that would discourage people from discarding their litter,” reports Metro.

He added: “I think it’s a really good idea but at the minute it’s fraught with some difficulties,” reports Metro.

In 2020, Plaid Cymru launched a petition calling on fast food companies to print customer number labels on self-service packaging.

The government has said that littering is not acceptable in any way and that a new prevention plan is being worked on with companies and municipalities.

But McDonald’s has tried some more interesting ways to repel bed bugs.

In Weymouth, Dorset, a branch got rid of the packaging entirely during the day to help combat waste, leading to chaotic scenes of people being delivered unwrapped chips and burgers.
