There was some good news announced last night as one of the survivors of the Berkeley balcony collapse has woken up from a coma.

The victim Aoife Beary aged 21 is believed to have woken up from being in a coma last night and doctors say she is no longer in a critical condition. The student, who is from Blackrock, Co Dublin, had been celebrating her birthday on the day when the tragic incident occurred last month which resulted in six of her friends being tragically killed and several others being injured. The good news was broken yesterday evening by Aoife’s family who released a statement on their Facebook page dedicated to their daughter called Friends of Aoife Beary.

The statement said: “Aoife is still in the ICU but is no longer on the critical list. She has slowly started to awaken from the induced coma. This process is expected to take some time,” they said. “Aoife has also started some communication with her parents and the medical team. She has had a tracheotomy within the last week and continues to make progress on her long road to recovery.” It is understood that Aoife has begun to communicate with her family who are currently by her bedside at the Stanford Medical Centre in Palo Alto, California.

Meanwhile one of the other victims of the disaster Hannah Waters, from Castleknock, Co Dublin, still remains in a serious condition in hospital.
