There was some good news for parents today as the Government have pledged their support to a new legislation that will see paternity leave being extended from 18 weeks to 26 weeks for children under the age of 8.
The news comes as the Social Democrats submitted proposals that will see all parents being given extended unpaid paternity leave without it affecting their employment rights.
However despite the legislation being given an overall backing, the Government say it will not be introduced immediately but instead over a two year period.
According to RTÉ News, it is thought that the Government has concerns over its impact on staffing levels within the public sector.
It is expected that the new legislation will go before an Oireachtas Committee before it is officially passed into law.
